FAQ

Quick answers about token counters, visibility, imports, and the questions people run into most often.

These are the questions people tend to ask once they start creating, editing, and sharing characters.

What Does "Token" Mean Here?

In Studio, token counts work best as a writing budget.

The app uses this rough rule:

  • 1 token ~= 4 characters

You will see token counters on major text fields and in the Studio summary.

Why Does Studio Keep Showing Token Counters?

Because some fields matter more than others.

The counters help you:

  • Trim bloated greetings.
  • Keep lore from swallowing the useful bits.
  • Notice when examples are doing too much work.
  • Compare a lean character against an overloaded one.

Should I Put Everything Into Lore?

Usually no.

Use the fields for what they are best at:

  • Greeting for the opening tone.
  • Description for the stable identity.
  • Lore for world and background context.
  • Message Examples for concrete behavioral patterns.

If a behavior really matters, examples are usually stronger than vague lore paragraphs.

When Should I Use Alternative Greetings?

Use them when the character supports multiple valid entry points, such as:

  • Different moods.
  • Different scene setups.
  • A soft opener versus an intense opener.

Do not use them just because you are unsure which single greeting to write. Fix the core greeting first.

What Is the Difference Between Public, Unlisted, and Private?

  • Public can be discovered normally.
  • Unlisted is shared through a tokenized link.
  • Private is not publicly accessible, whether that came from your own visibility choice or from moderation.

If you need something shareable without full discovery, use unlisted.

Can anime.gf Make My Character Private Automatically?

Yes.

anime.gf uses both user reports and automated moderation signals. If a character violates the Community Guidelines, it may be forced private or removed from public visibility while the team reviews it.

That is separate from the normal creator-side visibility choice in Studio.

Can I Generate Images Directly in Chat?

Not as a normal built-in chat mode right now.

anime.gf chats are mainly text-first. If you want a more visual opener, use character presentation fields well, especially the avatar, banner, and greeting. If you want an image inside the greeting itself, use a direct image URL rather than a generic share link.

How Do Memory Fragments Work?

Memory fragments are auto-generated summaries that help long chats carry some context forward.

You do not usually write them by hand. They build up as more conversation happens, with a new fragment appearing after roughly 8000 tokens of new chat content. The app also keeps only a relatively small amount of active fragment memory before older material gets condensed or archived.

If a very long chat starts losing the thread, memory settings are one of the first places worth checking.

Why Can't I Create a Character Right Now?

The most common causes are:

  • You are not signed in.
  • The avatar image is missing.
  • One or more text fields exceed the current limits.

See Troubleshooting for the practical fixes.

If you need creator help from other users, want to report a discovery card with extra context, or have a bug report or suggestion, the anime.gf Discord is the best public place to ask.
